What Are the Advantages of Driving a Diesel Engine?

We’ve got you covered here at Miller Brothers Auto Repair no matter whether you drive a gasoline or diesel automobile. We are a full-service auto maintenance and repair shop, and we are going to list the advantages of diesel engines below just in case you’re considering buying one.

Fuel Economy

One of the greatest advantages of driving a diesel is you will save money on fuel. Diesel fuel on average costs about the same as gasoline these days, so you don’t spend extra filling your tank with diesel. Once you have a full tank, you will get more miles per gallon out of the diesel fuel. This fuel is energy-dense, which means that it generates more power per gallon than gasoline does. In fact, today’s diesel engines are so fuel-efficient, that many drivers experience 30 percent fuel savings. Newer diesel engines can rival hybrids when it comes to gas mileage.

Greater Torque

This doesn’t mean that the diesel engine compromises on power. This is the beauty of diesel; the engines are actually more powerful even though they use less fuel. This is why semi-trucks use diesel engines instead of gasoline engines. Diesel engines run much hotter and produce much higher compression, which means that they produce more torque. In other words, your diesel engine will have more power when you press down on the accelerator than if you drive a gasoline engine.

Longevity

Because these engines produce so much torque, they have to be built to last. A diesel engine lasts much longer than a gasoline engine does, with the record being 900,000 miles. These engines are built to be durable and to withstand the high heat and compression they generate. You will get plenty of miles out of your diesel engine. Diesel engines don’t require spark plug maintenance, either. Diesel engines use glow plugs instead of spark plugs, and these only fire up when you start the automobile. This means you go much longer between the need to change the glow plugs than you would if you had spark plugs.

Resale Value

Finally, all of these things make diesel engines a hot-ticket item on the used car market. Many people find that they get a higher resale value for their diesel automobiles than they would if they were driving a gasoline automobile, especially if the vehicle has high mileage.
