My Car Won’t Start! Could It Be My Fuel Pump?

It is possible that your car will not start if you have a faulty fuel pump. The fuel pump lasts, on average, 100,000 miles. If the fuel pump has gone bad and is no longer pushing gasoline or diesel fuel into the engine, you will be unable to get your automobile started. Miller Brothers Auto Repair advises this is just one sign of a malfunctioning fuel pump. We are going to list the other signs below.

A Surging Engine

Sometimes, a bad fuel pump will release extra fuel when the engine doesn’t need it. Unfortunately, your engine will pick up speed unexpectedly as it burns away the excess fuel. You will continue to have this problem until you get the fuel pump replaced.

Stress Power Loss

More often, a faulty fuel pump will be unable to push enough gasoline or diesel fuel into the engine. When this happens, your vehicle loses power when the engine is under stress. For example, if you drive a truck and are towing a trailer, you may lose power if the fuel pump does not provide extra fuel.

High-Speed Sputtering

You will also notice that your engine has difficulty running when you are driving at higher speeds. Unfortunately, the engine will sputter if the fuel pump is not giving it enough gasoline or diesel fuel to support the speed. You may also experience acceleration lag.

Low Fuel Pressure

This is being caused because you have low fuel pressure in the engine. What this means is that the fuel pump is not generating enough fuel pressure and, as a consequence, it is not supplying the engine with the necessary fuel it needs to run inefficiently.

Overheating Engine

Another sign that your fuel pump is going bad is an overheating engine. This occurs because the fuel pump motor is overheating and transferring the excess heat into the engine. The fuel pump uses fuel to keep its motor cool. If it isn’t drawing enough fuel out of the tank, the motor will overheat.

Poor Fuel Economy

Finally, as you can see, a faulty fuel pump affects your engine’s efficiency. When this happens, you lose your fuel economy. The engine will burn through more fuel whether it has too little or too much. This leaves you heading to the service station more frequently.
