If your engine clicks when you try to start your car, there may be a problem in the electrical system. More than likely, however, the starter is dying. Miller Brothers Auto Repair explains that the starter is a small motor that gets your engine running. Sometimes, the starter will make clicking noises before it dies completely. It can also make clicking noises when it dies or not give you any warning at all. Hopefully, you will get some morning that your starter is going out.
The Engine Won’t Crank
For example, you may be having difficulties getting your engine to crank and fire up. This can be a sign that the starter is going bad. Eventually, if you do not replace the faulty starter, you will be unable to get your car, truck, or utility vehicle started. This can be frustrating as you will need to call a tow truck to have your vehicle towed to our shop so we can replace the starter.
The Lights Work, However
As we said above, clicking noises can indicate an electrical problem. One way to rule out the alternator and battery, however, is to turn the lights on. Assume for a moment that your headlights work but your engine won’t start. If this is the case, this rules out the alternator or battery. Your electrical system is working if the headlights are shining bright. Rather, you cannot get your automobile started because the starter motor has died.
There’s Smoke!
It’s important that you avoid trying to start your car too much when it refuses to do so. If after a couple of tries you are unable to get your automobile started, stop trying. If you continue to crank the ignition, you will overheat the starter’s motor. Once the motor is overheated, you will see smoke floating out from underneath your hood. You will also smell burning odors coming from the engine. Continuing to try to start your car will only make this matter worse.
The Starter Is Oily
Finally, if you inspect your vehicle starter and it is oily, you have a serious problem in your engine. Unfortunately, an oily starter is an indication that your left cylinder bank and engine gasket are leaking. The oil will damage the starter and prevent it from working.
Don’t worry. Miller Brothers Auto Repair in Somerset, WI, can help, so call us today. We’d be happy to test your vehicle’s starter and replace it if necessary.
